A Thrilling, Yet Shorter Adventure – Resident Evil 3 Remake Review

Image: Capcom

The Resident Evil 3 Remake, developed by Capcom and released in 2020, is a reimagining of the 1999 survival horror classic. The game follows Jill Valentine and Carlos Oliveira as they attempt to escape Raccoon City during the midst of a zombie outbreak, all while being pursued by the relentless Nemesis.

Gameplay (8/10) The Resident Evil 3 Remake retains the same over-the-shoulder camera and modernized controls introduced in the Resident Evil 2 Remake, providing a smooth and immersive experience. Combat feels satisfying, and the variety of weapons and tools available to players adds depth to the gameplay.

The game's pacing is more action-oriented than its predecessor, with a greater emphasis on intense combat encounters and thrilling set pieces. While this change in pace may appeal to some players, others may miss the slower, more methodical approach of the previous game. The puzzles and exploration elements in the Resident Evil 3 Remake are somewhat streamlined, which may disappoint fans of the original.

Graphics and Sound (9/10) The Resident Evil 3 Remake boasts impressive visuals, with highly detailed character models and atmospheric environments that make Raccoon City feel more alive and dangerous than ever. The game's gore and horror elements are rendered in gruesome detail, adding to the intensity of each zombie encounter. The game's sound design is excellent, with an ominous and suspenseful soundtrack that perfectly complements the game's atmosphere. Voice acting is strong, with the characters of Jill and Carlos delivering convincing and emotive performances.

Performance and Optimization (9/10) The Resident Evil 3 Remake generally runs smoothly on various platforms, with stable performance and minimal technical issues. The game's controls are responsive, and the loading times are relatively short, ensuring a seamless and immersive experience.

Content and Replayability (7/10) The Resident Evil 3 Remake offers a more condensed experience compared to its predecessor, with a shorter campaign and fewer puzzles and exploration elements. The game can be completed in roughly 6-8 hours, which may disappoint some players looking for a longer experience. While the game does offer unlockables and multiple difficulty settings to encourage replayability, the overall content is more limited than the Resident Evil 2 Remake. The game does include an additional multiplayer mode, Resident Evil: Resistance, which offers a separate, asymmetrical multiplayer experience, but it may not appeal to everyone.

In conclusion The Resident Evil 3 Remake is a thrilling and visually stunning reimagining of a survival horror classic, delivering intense action and memorable characters. However, its shorter campaign and more streamlined gameplay may disappoint some fans of the original game and the Resident Evil 2 Remake. While occasional performance issues and limited content may detract from the experience for some players, the game's high production values and exhilarating action sequences make it a worthy addition to the Resident Evil series.

Overall Score: 8/10
